After looking through the new rulebooks here is a list of things I think you will need to play. None of which are difficult to come by.
A copy of the player’s handbook. Classes and powers are more involved than in third and you will need to be able to reference a book.
A miniature of your character. The game is even more miniature based than 3rd edition. Characters are more durable now, so spending some time and energy on painting your own miniature can be very rewarding without thinking your character will just die and you will need to paint a new one next week (although that can be fun as well)
A red glass bead or other red marker. This is to mark when your character is bloodied.
Some sort of unique marker that can be identified with your character. this is to show when you have “marked” an enemy during an encounter.
Pencils
Paper
Character sheet. I think the one in the PHB will be completely inadequate as there is not enough room to define your powers. a custom excel type sheet is probably best at the moment
Note cards to write your powers on. this way you have them ready and can flip them over after you use them to show they are not availiable.
A good attitude. being enthusiastic and wanting to make things fun for everyone else is important
An open mind. 4e is very different form 3e and if you bring baggage from 3e it might be difficult to wrap your head around the new rules. For example a saving throw is just roll a d20 and try to roll a 10 or better in 4e. Your fortitude, reflex, and will defenses work like an armor class in 4e. |

| magic items should also be handled with note cards especially the ones with daily or encounter powers. Write the full write up on one side and ont he other just include the stuff that is always on. then when you use the daily power you can turn it over and you have the remaining abilities still in front of you. |

| Way back in the day I had a friend who used to keep his character on note cards... At the time I thought he was crazy, but it sounds like for 4th Ed. (and from seeing James character in action) note cards are going to be desirable to keep things in order with the daily, and per encounter etc. abilities. |
