I am trying to work out some alternative rules for identifying magic items.
Specifically lower powered items like potions that aren't worth an identify spell, but shouldn't need a higher level wizard to figure out what they are.
I also wonder why forge ring is a 12th level feat. why would a 12th level wizard be making rings that give a +5 to a swim check. (I think the designers over value rings, which are little more than a type of wondrous item) |

Okay I think I have a basic system worked out for identifying magic items.
to identify an item the character would make a roll using Knowledge (arcane or divine depending on the item) vs a difficulty determined by the commonality, complexity and other factors. I have a simple spreadsheet that I have worked out the modifiers on but here are some examples.
common, simple, use activated items like boots of springing and striding would be DC 15.
common, simple, consumable items like a cure potion would also be DC 15.
extraordinary, simple, consumable, rule-bending items like a potion of wish would be DC40
an uncommon, simple, use activated item like a +1 sword would be DC 20 |
